about

108/101 review:

"To Live and Shave in L.A. seem to chew through their segmented identities before the previous threads and resins that momentarily held them together have dried. They compulsively abjure representation. This disagreeable resilience prevents stasis but also perverts any hope of mainstream comprehension of their rather remarkable oeuvre. "Apple - Knife - Fly" is another unloaded slug, a prayerful gasp erupting through shale-like tides of mire. Anchored by the elemental piano runs of the group's newest initiate, free-jazz bulwark Matt Mitchell, the album's strident tapestries flutter and proliferate in the cupola of the mix (channeled from a faraway distress beacon by Tom Smith), while Shave co-founder Rat Bastard hammers sickly beams with worm-riddled knots of radio signals. Graham Moore's modular bleatings mist the fractures burdened by Patrick Spurlock's bass synth splints, and as Mitchell's looped chords craned over the horizon at the 24-minute mark I'm certain the collective membership scrambled to encrypt channel "Apfel" and dump their burner phones into the nearest cataract in anticipation of the creation of their next, mad head-scratcher."
